My version of an MTG Counter deck will blow you away!

One of the simplest decks yet most explosive decks out there is an MTG counter deck. This deck is a lot of fun to play. When it works it absolutely explodes! I will be showing you how to build one using green and black. Pretty much the way it works is to get a few choice creatures out there and pump them babies up!  Probably the most important creature in the deck is Managorger Hydra. Simply a fantastic card that can grow stupid fast!

 

let’s go over what this card can really do for you.

This is a 1/1 Creature-Hydra that costs 2 colorless and 1 green to cast. (wow not impressed…but wait, it gets better), it has trample (ok, getting better), It reads: Whenever a player casts a spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Managorger Hydra. Ok, shit just got REAL!!! You mean to tell me when ANY player casts a spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Managorger Hydra. Ohhhhh that’s insane, I will take 4 Thank You!

So you get the gist of what this card can do by itself, but there are cards in this deck that will virtually make this card explode.

For example Cast a HARDENED SCALES, an enchantment that costs 1 green mana that lets you put a +1/+1 counter on a creature for every +1/+1 counter you put on. LOL Gotta love this deck!

This MTG counter deck will run you about $53 on Card Kingdom

 

Time for the meat and bones of this deck. 2 insanely good creatures in this deck are WINDING CONSTRICTOR and CORPSEJACK MENACE. Both of these cards will give an additional buff of +1/+1 counters for every +1/+1 counter you add to a creature. The winding Constrictor is cheaper to cost but only adds 1 counter extra, whereas the Corpsejack Menace is more expensive to cast, its upside is that it will double the +1/+1 counters you add to a creature. That can be devastating to your opponent!

We also have AETHERBOURNE MAURAUDER a 2/2 creature that has flying and Lifelink for 3 colorless mana and 1 black. That doesn’t seem like much, but his other ability can win you the game quickly. Let’s say you have a Managorger Hydra out there with 10 +1/+1 counters on him and you drop the Marauder down, his ability reads: When Aetherborn Marauder enters the battlefield move any number of +1/+1 counters from other permanents you control onto Aetherborn Marauder. Oh, that’s nice! I think I will put 8 of those counters on him. Now I have a 10/10 flying, lifelink creature and a 4/4 Hydra with trample (he gets a +1/+1 counter when you play the Maurauder 😉 ) These creatures get big soooo fast!

Buff cards

Time to talk about our buff cards. There are 2 enchantments cards that will help put your creatures over the edge. The First is HARDENED SCALES. This costs 1 green mana to cast and reads:

If one or more +1/+1 counters would be placed on a creature you control, that many plus one +1/+1 counters are placed on it instead.

In a nutshell, put a +1/+1 counter on for every +1/+1 counter you put on. For example, Managorger Hydra has 3 counters on him and your opponent plays a spell, instead of adding 1 counter you add 2 😉 Awesome stuff right there!

Next is RANCOR, Probably one of the best green cards in magic IMO. It also is a 1 green mana to cast and reads:

Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+0 and has trample.
When Rancor is put into a graveyard from play, return Rancor to its owner’s hand.

Really??? This card is badass! I have used this card in 2 headed giant games to help pump up my teammates’ creature as well. A totally versatile card that can win games by itself, well ok maybe with a little help, but you get what I’m saying.

Next, Let’s kick this deck into overdrive with some instants! What would an MTG counter deck be without SOLIDARITY OF HEROES? A simply magnificent card for this deck, it reads:

Strive – Solidarity of Heroes costs 1 colorless mana and 1 green mana more to cast for each target beyond the first.
Choose any number of target creatures. Double the number of +1/+1 counters on each of them.

Double all my +1/+1 counters on multiple creatures? Yes, let’s just end the game right now. In most cases, this is a game ender!

Board Wipes

One last thing I would like to go over in my favorite MTG counter deck is our sorcery cards. I am running a total of 4 and they are basically board wipes. Ya gotta have some board wipes for those pesky “Go wide” decks. First is BONTU’S LAST RECKONING, which reads:

Destroy all creatures. Lands you control don’t untap during your next untap step.

It takes care of business but leaves you mana screwed on your next turn. I find if you just use the mana needed for the Bontu you are generally ok on your next turn.

Next is LANGUISH, it clears the board by giving all creatures -4/-4. This card works great in this deck because most of our creatures in play are usually larger than 4. A must in this deck.
